dANCE RECITAL 2024

We are so thrilled to be hosting our annual recital at TAPAC - The Auckland Performing Arts Centre in Westmere.

Both our recital and technical dress rehearsal will be held on Sunday 17th November. Much like previous years, our full cast rehearsal will be running in the morning with our two performances running in the afternoon/early evening. A 2:00pm and 4:00pm show. We will be awarding our three major awards following the second show.

In order to run our recital as successfully and smoothly as possible, it is absolutely essential that all students and caregivers read and understand the information below.

Please ensure your child is on-site 10 mins prior to their designated time slot so they have time to get dressed. Photographs will be taken after their stage time. Please ensure your child is in full hair and makeup as they will have their professional images taken after their stage rehearsal. Your child is only required to stay for their allocated rehearsal time. Parents and caregivers are welcome to sit in the foyer whilst rehearsals take place. Please do not enter the theatre during rehearsal.

Each group will be needed for a 15min time window in the morning. This is 10mins of stage time as above, and 5mins of photography time. Students will go home after their rehearsal time slot to give them a break for lunch/rest. They will then return to the theatre at 1:15pm for the 2:00pm show. You are welcome to wait in the foyer whilst your child is in dress rehearsal.

Each group will have roughly 10 minutes stage time with their teacher to go through their dance. After completing their stage time rehearsal, dancers will be required to make their way back to the on-site studios for their professional group images and individual portraits (hence why make-up and hair must be done for rehearsal). This is the only opportunity for students to have their portraits taken.

tickets

Tickets will be available for purchase from 9:00am Thursday 14th November via iTicket using the following link: http://www.iticket.co.nz/events/2024/nov/a-moment-in-time

Food and drink

The theatre bar will be open this year for beer, wine and snacks.

Parking

We understand parking could be a little challenging at our previous venue. You will be pleased to know there is a huge carpark at the front of TAPAC. This is facilitated by Auckland Transport and within the hours 8am - 5pm is rated $2 an hour or $8 for the day. There is free 3 hour parking available on Motions road and the main car park becomes free after 5pm.

health and safety/drop-off and pick-up

In order to keep our students safe, all students must be signed in and signed out by their parent/caregiver listed on their enrolment form when visiting the venue. This applies for both the dress rehearsal and recital itself. There will be a list of student names by the green room entrance. You will be required to complete this when your child is dropped off and picked up for rehearsal, and when your child is dropped off and picked up at show time. Students will not be allowed to exit the green room under any circumstances without a parent or caregiver signing them in/out. Please do not enter the green room to collect your child. Each group will be escorted from the green room to the front entrance by their designated parent helper. Your patience is appreciated.

backstage

Dancers, parent helpers, and stage crew are the only people permitted backstage. Due to strict health and safety restrictions, parents will not be allowed to come backstage under any circumstances. If you think your child will need support backstage, please let us know, or alternately, come on board as a parent helper for your child’s group. We will have snacks, colouring books and pencils, reading books etc. to help keep students comfortable and occupied backstage.

what your child needs to bring on show day

Your child’s costume will be packed and prepared for them to change into on show day. Each child will have a colour-coded paper bag/or a garment rack, containing everything they need to wear (costume, hair clips, jewellery etc.). This bag will remain onsite. Each class group will have one designated parent helper + the assistance of our other parent helpers on the day. To ensure your child is happy backstage, please pack the following items into a NAMED backpack.

  • Water bottle. Please no fizzy drinks or juice. Any sticky drinks will be tipped out in case of damage to costumes.

  • Small selection of snacks. Please avoid packing anything messy such as yoghurts to avoid costume mishaps!

  • Any snuggly animals or support toys/blankies. Please name these.

  • Dance shoes. This is very important, so please triple check you have them before you leave home!

  • Ballet tights (if your child is in preschool/Tiny Dancers or ballet classes).

  • Lipstick for touch-ups.

  • Any extra activities they may want to work on during our backstage downtime. Please avoid packing anything valuable as we cannot be held liable should your items go missing…

We aim to keep our backstage environment calm, relaxed, and quiet. We provide an assortment of colouring books and pencils, iPad for watching movies, books for reading, a small range of snacks, and lots of support and encouragement. We also carry back-up stock of ballet shoes, tights, lipstick, hairspray, pins, clips, and hair ties, first aid kit, and anything else your child may need in case they forget.

photography and videography

We will have two professional photographers working with us on recital day. Please refrain from taking photos during the show as this can negatively impact our professional images and is disruptive to other attendees who want to enjoy the show. You are welcome to video the show, however, please ensure your flash is off. All portraits will be available for you to download free-of-charge as part of your performance fee. Our portraits and group shots will be taken in the morning during our rehearsal time, so please ensure your child attends with full make-up and hair (as outlined below). We will only be assisting students with hair and make-up “touch-ups”, so will be unable to assist your child should they arrive without this done.

Costumes

Dancers MUST wear the correct footwear. If your dancer arrives without correct shoes, we will charge a new pair to your account. Capezio Full Sole Ballet Shoes for ballet students and Capezio E-Series Slip on Jazz Shoes in Black for jazz students. All ballet students including preschool students are required to wear ballet tights underneath their dance costume. These must be purchased from us to ensure the colour is correct.

Costumes and accessories are not to go home under any circumstances! Each student will have a designated dance bag with their name on it containing their costume and any accessories they need. Dance bags will be placed in the green room in class groups. There will be a parent helper allocated to each group to assist students with getting dressed and undressed both in the morning during rehearsal time, and at show time. At the end of the show, all items should go back into the dance bags provided.

hair and make-up - All Dance Genres and Class Levels

In order to make things as easy as possible for parents/caregivers and our backstage team, all students are to do their own hair and make-up at home before coming to the venue.

Students should wear their hair in a tight, neat bun secured using hair gel, hair spray and pins as shown below (don’t be shy - use lots of hairspray and gel!). If your child’s hair is too short to pin up, please ensure hair is clipped back out of their face. Please see the hair bun tutorial below.

Make-up should also be kept fairly simple, applied with the intention to highlight facial features under the stage lights. Foundation is optional. If you choose to apply foundation, please keep it light. Highlight the eyes using black mascara for lashes and some pencil to define the eyebrows. Blush on the cheeks is recommended. Finally, all dancers should wear a red lipstick in a shade that suits their skin tone. Due to health and safety, we are unable to provide lipstick touch-ups backstage, so please pack your child’s lipstick in their bag for last minute touch-ups. If you have any questions regarding hair or make-up, please ask Miss Catie or your child’s teacher.

  • Absolutely. It is essential that all dancers attend the morning rehearsal. This will give students the time to run through their dance on-stage and have an on-stage safety briefing. The morning rehearsal is also when our dancers have their professional portraits taken, so it is not to be missed!

  • Yes. All students except for our Saturday 9:00am Tiny Dancers expected to perform in both our 2:00pm and 4:00pm show. Our Saturday 9:00am dancers will only dance in the first show, so please ensure you buy tickets for the 2:00pm show only.

  • No. All costumes will be kept on-site in designated bags for each dancer. The only thing you need to do at home is hair and make-up (as outlined above). Please also remember to pack your child’s dance shoes and ballet tights (ballet and preschool students).

  • The team at Pure Dance will be happy to assist you should your dancer need shoes, however, they are closed on Sunday. If your dancer forgets their shoes, we will contact you via the phone number listed on your ClassManager profile. Please triple check your dancer has packed their dance shoes in their bag before you head out the door!
